Today in the countryside.
The sun was bright, with quite a few clouds — stacked up in the sky, letting light through in patches, alternating bright and dark across the ground, as if someone was slowly adjusting the brightness. There were a few rows of rapeseed in the fields, vivid yellow, standing out sharply this time of year. Not many, but enough — spring was already there, in that color.
The wind was mild. When it passed, it carried the smell of earth and a faint sweetness of pollen. The fava beans in the field were growing thick and deep green, their color sitting nicely against the yellow of the rapeseed. The irrigation channel ran alongside, the water moving slowly, cloudy with soil — the smell of spring plowing.
Standing there, the things on my mind seemed to thin out a little, diluted by all that yellow.
There’s been something on my mind lately. The road ahead isn’t clear yet — I don’t know where the answers are. Fine during the day — there are things to do, places to be. But at night when it gets quiet, the unsettled things float back up, circling around, especially tiresome before sleep.
But today, standing on the field path, none of that came.
Maybe the sun made me too lazy to think. Maybe those few rows of yellow flowers took my attention away. Either way, for that stretch of time, there was nothing — just looking, just standing, mind empty. A rare thing.
I looked up at the sky. The clouds were moving, slowly, with no apparent destination and no apparent need for one.
I looked down at the ground. Insects were busy in the field, grass was growing, the rapeseed would bloom and then fade, and next year it would bloom again. All of this was happening continuously, entirely unrelated to whether I had things to worry about.
Standing there, I suddenly felt very small. Not in a discouraging way — more like an inexplicable lightness. So that’s how big my problems are, out here. Just this small.
Sitting in the courtyard now. The sun is just right — warm without being harsh, the kind that makes you feel slow and content. Tree shadows move across the ground; when the wind comes, they shift and settle again. Quiet.
Not an empty quiet — everything is here, just unhurried. Birdsong, a car passing somewhere in the distance, a thin line of smoke rising from a chimney far off, drifting apart slowly, disappearing somewhere.
That’s how midday is in the countryside. Slow. Unhurrying.
I thought about it for a moment, and felt that this was actually quite good.
Not that I’d figured anything out, or arrived at some insight. The things on my mind are still there — tomorrow I head back to the city, and those matters will still need facing. But not today. Today there’s sunlight, there are flowers, there’s this courtyard, there’s this unhurrying midday. These are real too. They count.
For now, I’ll just stay here.
